The Power of Music

How music can change your mood or bring back a memory.

Written by Gabriella Serruya

Music is powerful.

Think of a time you were listening to music and a song affected you. Can you remember a certain moment? Maybe an old boyfriend/girlfriend? Do you have specific music you listen to at certain times? I have a cleaning the house playlist, a running playlist, car songs, even a wake up playlist to help us get up in the morning and a get-to-sleep playlist. Music can give us energy or calm us down.

Music can even help memory. In university, I would listen to different types of music while studying. When I needed to recall the information, I just needed to hum that song. The studied information came back to me quickly!

My grandmother has always loved the song “Que Sera Sera.” We have been singing it together for a long time. After my grampa died 4 years ago, we started singing it more often, As her dementia has become worse, it’s a song that has helped soothe her in difficult moments. Now, she is in the hospital. When she’s in pain, I sing our song and magically she relaxes, her brow is less furrowed, and her blood pressure lowers. Sometimes, she is aware enough to sing the chorus with me, but mostly now it’s the small smile that I see that lets me know she hears me.

I hope that everyone has several playlists (if you don’t, we’ve included a few links below to create your own playlist on your device).

Change your mood. Match your mood. Enjoy the music.
